Short Stories - Literary Devises Title:The crooked man

Point of View: It is first person point of view, because the narrator is using " I " as narration in the story, the narrator is watson.

Protagonist: Sherlock Holmes, because the narrator tolds many thing about him, and he is the one that need to find out who or what killed colonel. Sherlock Holmes is a very smart person, he likes to observe things, and he can find out the answer by getting a little clue from a person or a thing.

What type of character is the Protagonist?
Static Character and Round character

Antagonist: Colonel, because he is the one that threaten the protagonist, he is the one that give questions and needs helps from Sherlock Holmes.
But the antagonist also can be Henry wood, because he is the person who behind all this.

Describe the setting The setting of the story is taking place in watson's house during one summer night.
Watson suddenly heard the clang of bell, the mood is full of suspicious and mystery.
The story might taking in England, because there is where Sherlock Holmes came from.
Type of Conflict: Man vs. Man

Describe the main conflict: Man vs. Man , Sherlock Holmes need to find out who or what killed the colonel.

Describe the Climax of the Story: I think the climax is the moment that Miss Morrison tells exactly what happened on Monday evening.
How does the Protagonist change over the course of the story?
He change over the course of the story by learning how the colonel died and find out by each clue he has.
Describe the relationship between the title and the theme.
The title is " The crooked man", it is a pretty good description for Henry wood, the title describe Henry wood as a crooked man, the relationship between the title and the theme is the title helps to make the theme and conflict more clear, and Henry wood is the one that behind all this, and he also created the theme, so the title is describing what kind of person does Henry wood is, and how the theme related to him.

How does the main conflict help to illustrate the theme?
The main conflict is Man vs. Man, without the main conflict, the theme won't be that easy to find out.
In the crooked man, the conflict is Sherlock Holmes vs. Henry wood, Henry is a very invisible and important person in the story, as I told relationship between the theme and the title, Henry wood is a very important person to illustrate the theme,and the main conflict, so Henry wood is strongly related in the main conflict and helps to created the theme, and making it more clear.
How does the climax help to illustrate the theme?
The climax is giving clues for solving the crime, in this moment it tells us the theme.
The theme is " No one can leave the circle of crime".

This is the rising action, rising action always give hints about what is the climax going to be, in this situation, it tells us the climax
can be Sherlock Holmes get an idea of who killed the Colonel.

" He ran through the hall door and round to the lawn, upon which the long French windows opened".
it give a hint that tells us about there are maybe a third person in the room, because the windows are open, the killer maybe escape from that French windows.

Irony: " Yes, David strayed a little now and then you know, and on one occasion in the same direction as Sergean James Barclay".
I don't think the author randomly make " David" up.


Imagery: " It may seem very foolish in your eyes,"
It used the one of five sense to give people an image in their mind.
"The lawn is thirty yards across, and is only divided from the highway by a low wall with an iron rail above it."
"was lying a singular club of hard carved wood with a bone handle."

Describe the relationships between the class theme and the story.
This story is related to our class theme, because this kind of crime short stories always leave so many question to let people solve it,
first it gave some hints, and give audience a clue to know what happen next, the author is using this kind of strategies to make audience
to understand the story in steps, and using slow pace to make them more exciting to know what is the next step and answer.
It is like our class theme mystery, we need to very carefully using clues and hints to solve a mystery, like the story using clues to let us to know the answer.
